HSE Commercial Diving Medical

Why you need a HSE Diving Medical?

An HSE Diving Medical is a legal requirement for anyone pursuing a commercial diving career in the UK.

Under the Diving at Work Regulations 1997, all commercial divers must hold a valid Certificate of Fitness to Dive, issued by an Approved Medical Examiner of Divers (AMED).

You can find more information on the official HSE website.

Book your HSE Medical

At Aquamarine Medicals, your examination is carried out by a specialist diving doctor with a clear understanding of the physical and environmental demands of commercial diving.

The aim is to identify any health concerns that could affect your safety underwater — protecting both your wellbeing and your career.

Book your HSE medical online today. Or call us on 01752 289317 to speak with us directly.

  • On arrival, you will be asked to provide a urine sample (this is not a drugs test).

One of our professional and friendly nurses will then carry out:

    • Height and weight measurements

    • Blood pressure check

    • Hearing assessment

    • Vision testing

    • Chester Step Test to assess cardiovascular fitness.
Please bring shorts and suitable clothing for exercise.

    • Spirometry (lung function testing), performed both before and after exercise.

You will then be seen by the diving doctor for:

    • A comprehensive physical assessment

    • A detailed discussion of your general health and diving background

    • Evaluation of heart health, neurological function, and joint/muscle fitness for diving.

  • To ensure your appointment runs smoothly, please bring the following:

    • Photo ID – Passport or driving licence.

    • Your previous HSE Diving Medical certificate (if you have one).

    • Comfortable clothing suitable for exercise, as you will complete a Chester Step Test.

    • Relevant medical letters or reports from your GP or Consultant if you have experienced a significant medical issue since your last examination.

If this is your first HSE Diving Medical, or your previous certificate has expired, please ask your GP to complete the required medical questionnaire form in advance of your appointment.

Common Questions

Here are the answers to the most frequently asked ones to help you get started.

  • One year is the maximum time these medicals can be signed off for.

A bit like your MOT however, it is possible to book your medical one month in advance of its expiry date and for your new medical to be one year on from the old expiry date, so you do not lose time.

  • Please ask your GP to complete this form and bring it with you.
